Would you accept some kind of lawsuit, like making him go to mental health treatment and get academic training and work hard and be very nice and then pay you a bunch of money?

What if the guy who killed you son was really good, and your son was really bad? Would you accept that as just or would you demand blood money or prison time anyway?
