Without the knoweldge for certain that God exists and is on your side, you might not be able to do the right things in certain circumstances, like when you are surrounded by treasonous rapist infighting murderous bastards!
You might need to believe in God to see that God exists, and you might have to see that God exists and is on your side before you do anything truly uber heroic as an adult.
